KINGSTON

Canbury Project

Until the arrival of the railway in the 1860s, the area to the North of the tracks that run from Kingston to Norbiton was largely rural and owned by Wilbrahim Tollemache, the 6th Earl of Dysart. The area was known as Canbury, a name which probably derived from the ecclesistical canons that had administered the land from the 12th Century until the Reformation, on behalf of Merton Priory.

I am researching the history of North Kingston, and plan to put up what I find on this site. If you have any information on the history of the area, I would welcome you sharing it with me. Old photos are of particular interest alongside original documentation or personal recollections that provide insight into the history of the area. I can make copies of material you wish to keep.
