OK, there is great skiing and snowboarding all over the Alps... in the Rockies... other places too, but if you were to choose one region over all others, it would have to be in the Swiss Alps. Not that the Swiss Alps are a homogenous group of resorts. Flashy Verbier, stately St Moritz, French-speaking Valais, the Schweizerdeutsch-speaking Graubünden, awesome Zermatt, the dozens of small gems... indeed one of my goals is to identify resorts outside the obvious glamorous ski and snowboard destinations in Switzerland that deserve a day trip, a weekend away, a holiday or even to be used as a base for a season. What makes Switzerland truly unique is the quality of public transport that makes every single resort accessible by a train, bus or cableway. Some resorts are easier to reach than others, but many are surprisingly accessible for a day trip from the major conurbations of Switzerland or for a weekend break from virtually anywhere in Europe. In addition the reliability, availability and frequency of public transport makes it feasible to take in several of the world's great winter sports areas in a week or fortnight break. Switzerland isn't a cheap country, but there are some tips I've discovered that can make skiing or snowboarding there relatively inexpensive. I'm currently documenting skiing in Switzerland, building on the great work of James Riddell and Alistair Scott. It is very much a work in progress, so any tips for resorts, runs, accommodation, dining, entertainment etc are gratefully received and will be acknowledged if they get incorporated. The working blog for this project is Winter Sports in Switzerland, the web site is at Swiss Winter Sports, and there is a target list of resorts I cover here (I've got to over 60 of them so far, some many times). Topics that I'm working on that are posted in the blog are listed below. I'm hoping to largely use photos I've taken myself:- here are some at Flickr: Nic Oatridge's Flickr pages |
